New Delhi, Sep 12 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in coordination with the Ministry of External affairs (MEA), the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Punjab Police, on Saturday secured the extradition of a Red Notice fugitive, involved in double murder and other crimes, from Moldova, achieving India's first-ever extradition from a European nation, an official said.
Amritpal Singh alias Gurpal Singh was brought to India from Moldova on the request of Punjab Police, the official said in a statement.
He was wanted in multiple criminal cases registered in Punjab.
The criminal cases against the subject include double murder with the use of firearms, offences under the Arms Act and NDPS Act.
His criminal activities included offences related to forgery/cheating, use of forged documents and violations of the Passport Act.
The CBI in a statement said, "At the request of Punjab Police, the CBI got a Red Notice published against the subject through INTERPOL channels. Subsequently, the subject was geo-located and arrested by the Moldovian authorities."
"Thereafter, an extradition request was submitted to the Moldovian authorities. Following due legal process, the Moldovian authorities granted extradition of the subject to India," it added.
A four-member team of Punjab Police visited Chisinau in Moldova to bring him back to the country, the CBI said.
The CBI, as the National Central Bureau for INTERPOL in India, coordinates with all law enforcement agencies in India through BHARATPOL for assistance via INTERPOL channels.
More than 175 wanted criminals have been successfully brought back to India in the last few years through coordination via INTERPOL channels, the statement said.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said that Amritpal Singh alias Amrit Dalam is a key operative of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang.
He is wanted in multiple cases of murders, attempt to murder, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), Arms Act and Narcotic offences, the DGP said on social media platform X.
He said this was the first-ever extradition secured by Punjab Police from a European country, marking a significant milestone in the fight against organised crime.
Accused Amritpal Singh was detained by Moldovan authorities on February 24, while he was attempting to cross the Otaci state border towards Ukraine, following which the extradition process against him was initiated through Punjab Police's Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC).
